Self Portrait with Her Daughter, Julie, by Élisabeth Louise Vigée-Le Brun, 1786

Élisabeth Louise Vigée-Le Brun (Marie Élisabeth Louise; French, 1755 – 1842) was a highly accomplished artist, and portrait painter to Marie Antoinette of France. On 12 February 1780, Vigée-Le Brun gave birth to a daughter, Jeanne Julie Louise, whom she called Julie. She painted this self portrait with her daughter in 1786.

In 1789, during the French Revolution, Le Brun feared for her life and fled the country with her young daughter. They lived in exile in Italy, Austria, and Russia, and Le Brun continued to paint the elite families, including the granddaughters of Catherine the Great. As the years passed, Julie grew up and married a nobleman in Russia. Le Brun was finally able to return to France in 1804.
