Pierre François Eugène Giraud (French, 1806 – 1881) painted this humorous scene in 1880. This oil-on-canvas work depicts a carriage full of travelers, stopped for inspection at a custom’s border check along Simplon Road in Switzerland. It measures 55 by 77 1/2 inches (140 by 197 cm), and it is held in a private collection in France. This painting went to auction at Sotheby’s in 2014, at which time it was estimated to sell for 120,000 to 150,000 USD.
