Master painter Rachel Ruysch (1664 – 1750) of The Netherlands created this “still life of roses, tulips, a sunflower, and other flowers in a glass vase with a bee, butterflies, and other insects upon a marble ledge” in 1710. This oil on canvas painting, in a fine French carved and gilt wood frame, measures 88.9 x 71.1 cm (35 3/8 x 28 in). The painting had not been seen at a public auction for more than 100 years and was presumed lost, when in 2013, it resurfaced and sold at Sotheby’s for 1,650,500 GBP.
