Daniel Hermann Anton Melbye (Danish, 1818 – 1875) painted this stormy sea menacing a lighthouse on a perilous rocky outcrop in 1846. This lighthouse closely resembles Smeaton’s Lighthouse, the third Eddystone Lighthouse, on the treacherous Eddystone Rocks south of Cornwall in Devon, England. The Smeaton Lighthouse saved many brave seafarers, from 1759 until 1877 when erosion to the rocks underneath made the structure unstable. This large painting on canvas, measuring 112 x 158 cm (44.1 x 62.2 inches), is a fitting tribute.
