Henry Ossawa Tanner (American, 1859 – 1937) painted this moving portrait in 1894. He was the first African-American painter to be recognized internationally. His mother escaped slavery via the Underground Railroad. He studied art in Philadelphia at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and in 1891 moved to Paris to study and live his final years.
